Opening Sentences
Welcome & Opening Prayer
Opening Hymn: Eternal Father, Strong to Save
Eternal Father, strong to save,
whose arm restores the restless wave,
who bids the mighty ocean deep
its own appointed bounds to keep:
we cry, O God of majesty,
for those in peril on the sea.
O Christ, whose voice the waters heard
and hushed their raging at your word,
who walked across the surging deep
and in the storm lay calm in sleep:
we cry, O Lord of Galilee,
for those in peril on the sea.
O Trinity of love and power,
preserve their lives in danger’s hour:
from rock and tempest, flood and flame,
protect them by your holy name,
and to your glory let there be
glad hymns of praise from land and sea.

The Lord’s Prayer
Officiant: Gathering all our cares into one, let us pray in the words of Jesus.
All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth
as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those
who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the
kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
The Commendation
Officiant: Give rest, O Christ, to your servants with your saints,
All: where sorrow and pain are no more, neither sighing, but life everlasting.
Officiant: You only are immortal, the creator and maker of all; and we are mortal, formed of the earth, and
to earth shall we return. For so did you ordain when you created me, saying, “You are dust, and to dust you
shall return.” All of us go down to the dust; yet even at the grave we make our song: Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
All: Give rest, O Christ, to your servants with your saints, where sorrow and pain are no more, neither
sighing, but life everlasting.
Officiant: Into your hands, O merciful Saviour, we commend your servant Stephen. Acknowledge, we pray, a
sheep of your own fold, a lamb of your own flock, a sinner of your own redeeming. Receive him into the arms
of your mercy, into the blessed rest of everlasting peace, and into the glorious company of the saints in light.
Amen.
Nunc Dimittis: sung by the choir
Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace,
according to thy word.
For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,
which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;
To be a light to lighten the Gentiles,
and to be the glory of thy people Israel.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen.
Blessing & Dismissal
Hymn: I Feel the Winds of God Today
I feel the winds of God today;
today my sail I lift,
though heavy oft with drenching spray
and torn with many a rift;
if hope but light the water’s crest,
and Christ my bark will use,
I’ll seek the seas at his behest,
and brave another cruise.
It is the wind of God that dries
my vain regretful tears,
until with braver thoughts shall rise
the purer, brighter years;
if cast on shores of selfish ease
or pleasure I should be,
Lord, let me feel thy freshening breeze,
and I’ll put back to sea.
If ever I forget thy love
and how that love was shown,
lift high the blood-red flag above;
it bears thy name alone.
Great pilot of my onward way,
Thou wilt not let me drift.
I feel the winds of God today;
today my sail I lift.
All are invited to a reception in the church immediately following the service.
