The ancient office of Compline derives its name from a Latin word meaning ‘completion’ (completorium). A contemplative service that emphasizes spiritual peace, it is above all a service of quietness and reflection before rest at the end of the day. Please participate, where indicated, as much or as little as you would like. At the end of the service, please depart in silence.
Opening Sentences & Responses (said)
The God of peace grant us a quiet night and a perfect end.
Amen.
Our help is in the name of the Lord,
the maker of heaven and earth.
The angels of God guard us through the night,
and quiet the powers of darkness.
It is but lost labour that we haste to rise up early,
and so late take our rest, and eat the bread of anxiety.
For those beloved of God are given gifts even while they sleep.
In the beginning, before time, before people, before the world began,
God was.
Here and now, among us, beside us, clearer than air, closer than breathing,
God is.
In all that is to come, when we have turned to dust and human knowledge has been completed,
God will be.
Not despairing of earth, but delighting in it, not condemning the world, but redeeming it
through Jesus Christ, by the power of the Holy Spirit,
God was, God is, God will be.
Introit: Hail Gladdening Light (John Stainer)
sung by the choir. Words from Koine Greek, 3rd Cent.
Hail, gladdening Light, of his pure glory poured
Who is the immortal Father, heavenly blest,
Holiest of holies, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Now we are come to the sun’s hour of rest,
The lights of evening round us shine,
We hymn the Father, Son and Holy Spirit divine.
Worthiest art Thou at all times to be sung with undefiled tongue,
Son of our God, giver of life, alone:
Therefore in all the world thy glories, Lord, they own.
Confession (said)
For the forgiveness of our sins and offences, let us pray to the Lord.
For the right roads we avoided travelling,
and the kindly words we refused to share;
for the false gods who received our worship
and the true selves we have starved of love.
God, by your grace,
forgive us.
For the hidden hurts we have held too tightly,
and the promises which we never kept;
for the careless use of our time and money.
God, by your grace,
forgive us.
For all we should be and all we can amend.
God, in your love,
renew us.
For all you have in store for us and all you may ask of us.
God, in your love,
prepare us.
For the love of the world and the love of its people.
God, in your love,
commit us.

Kyrie (sung)
Hear and believe these words of Jesus:
Your sins are forgiven.
Go in peace.
Come and follow me.
Reading: Isaiah 50:4-9a
Psalm 51 (sung by the choir)
Antiphon: Have mercy, O God, according to your loving kindness
1. In your great compassion, blot out my offences.
2. Wash me through and through from my wickedness and cleanse me from
my sin.
3. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me.
4. Against you only have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight.
5. And so you are justified when you speak and upright in your judgment.
Antiphon: Have mercy, O God, according to your loving kindness
6. Indeed, I have been wicked from my birth, a sinner from my mother’s womb.
7. For behold, you look for truth deep within me, and will make me understand
wisdom secretly.
8. Purge me from my sin, and I shall be pure; wash me, and I shall be clean indeed.
9. Make me hear of joy and gladness, that the body you have broken may rejoice.
Antiphon: Have mercy, O God, according to your loving kindness
10. Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquities.
11. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
12. Cast me not away from your presence and take not your holy Spirit from me.
13. Give me the joy of your saving help again and sustain me with your bountiful
Spirit.
Antiphon: Have mercy, O God, according to your loving kindness
14. I shall teach your ways to the wicked, and sinners shall return to you.
15. Deliver me from death, O God, and my tongue shall sing of your righteousness,
O God of my salvation.
16. Open my lips, O Lord, and my mouth shall proclaim your praise.
17. Had you desired it, I would have offered sacrifice, but you take no delight in burnt
offerings.
18. The sacrifice of God is a troubled spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you
will not despise.
Antiphon: Have mercy, O God, according to your loving kindness
The Gospel: John 13:21-32
At the end of the reading, the people respond, Thanks be to God.

Anthem: God So Loved the World (John Stainer)
sung by the choir. Words from John 3:16-17.
God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son,

Intercessory Prayers
with sung response: #634 Jesus, Remember Me
O God, your unfailing providence sustains the earth which nurtures us and the life we live: watch
over those, both night and day, who work while others sleep, and grant that we may never forget

For the peace of the whole world, and on behalf of those who have no peace this night, we pray to you:
Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.
Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.
For those who are weary, sleepless or depressed, we pray to you:
Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.
Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.
For those who are hungry, sick, or frightened, we pray to you:
Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.

Antiphon: Have mercy, O God, according to your loving kindness
The Gospel:
John 13:21-32
At the end of the reading, the people respond,

The Respond (sung)
Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit;
Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.
For you have redeemed me, O Lord, O God of truth;
Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.
Hymn
#549 Our Darkness Is Never Darkness
Our darkness is never darkness in your sight;
The deepest night is clear as the daylight.
Nunc Dimittis (sung by the choir)
Preserve us O Lord, while waking,
and guard us while sleeping;
That awake we may watch with Christ,
and asleep we may rest in peace.
LORD, now you let your servant go in peace;
your word has been fulfilled.
My own eyes have seen the salvation
which you have prepared
in the sight of every people;
a light to reveal you to the nations
and the glory of your people Israel.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and will be for ever. Amen.
Preserve us O Lord, while waking,
and guard us while sleeping;
That awake we may watch with Christ,
and asleep we may rest in peace.
The Lord's Prayer (sung)
Our Father,
who art in Heaven,
hallowed by thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth, as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trepasses
as we forgive them that trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.
Anthem:
God So Loved the World (John Stainer)
sung by the choir. Words from John 3:16-17.
God so loved the world
that he gave his only begotten Son,
that whoso believeth in Him
should not perish but have everlasting life.
For God sent not his Son into the world
to condemn the world,
but that the world through him might be saved.
God so loved the world.
Intercessory Prayers
with sung response: #634 Jesus, Remember Me
O God, your unfailing providence sustains the earth which nurtures us and the life we live: watch over those, both night and day, who work while others sleep, and grant that we may never forget that our common life depends upon each other’s toil; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
For the peace of the whole world, and on behalf of those who have no peace this night, we pray to you:
Jesus, remember me
when you come into your kingdom.
Jesus, remember me
when you come into your kingdom.
For those who are weary, sleepless or depressed, we pray to you:
Jesus, remember me
when you come into your kingdom.
Jesus, remember me
when you come into your kingdom.
For those who are hungry, sick, or frightened, we pray to you:
Jesus, remember me
when you come into your kingdom.
Jesus, remember me
when you come into your kingdom.
For rest and refreshment, we pray to you:
Jesus, remember me
when you come into your kingdom.
Jesus, remember me
when you come into your kingdom.
(singing continues and gradually concludes)
Collect (said)
Come, O Spirit of God, and make within us your dwelling place and home. May our darkness be dispelled by your light, and our troubles calmed by your peace; may all evils be redeemed by your love, all pain transformed through the suffering of Christ, and all dying glorified by his risen life. Amen.
God on the road, God in the wilderness,
God making all things new.
God in our tears, God in our laughter
God making all things new.
God in our living, God in our dying,
God making all things new.
Into your hands we place ourselves, O Christ,
for your holding, your directing,
your inspiring, your perfecting.
Into your hands we place ourselves.
Bless us with your power,
to heal, help, liberate and challenge.
Bless us with your yearning
for a better world and fuller faith.
Bless us with your Holy Spirit
within us and among us. Amen.
