The Pop-Up Study Café Returns

1/1/2026

For the fifth time in two years, the sanctuary at St. John’s was transformed into a pop-up study café for Acadia University students during exam time. This simple but meaningful offering has become a much-anticipated tradition—for students and
parishioners alike. There is a special joy in getting to know students who return year after year, familiar faces who greet us like old friends.

Each afternoon from 2:00 to 8:00 pm during one week in December, the sanctuary filled with students settling in at individual tables or gathering in small groups, books and laptops spread out as they focused on final papers and exams. Despite
two snowstorms, this was the busiest café yet – so much so that we hastily set up additional tables to accommodate everyone!

Many students shared how grateful they were for a calm, welcoming place to study, and some returned every day. They expressed their appreciation in person and with handwritten thank-you notes, reminding us why this café matters—not just as a
place to study, but as a place of welcome, care, and connection. Here’s a taste:

"Thanks so much for offering us a space where we can come and feel
comfortable, welcomed and productive!"

"Once again, you’ve made this the best place in Wolfville to go during exams. I hope you know how much we appreciate the compassion you’ve shown us during a stressful time of year. The snacks were incredible!"

This café was truly a community effort. Parishioners generously provided healthy snacks and homemade treats, while others took turns hosting, welcoming students, and keeping the kettle on. The kitchen became its own gathering place, filled with conversations while water boiled and mugs were refilled. Hot chocolate and mulled cider were clear favourites, offering warmth and comfort on cold December days.

What began as an experiment has grown into a regular part of outreach in the life of St. John’s. The pop-up study café is no longer just something we host; it has become part of who we are—a place of welcome, hospitality, and connection, at
exactly the moment it’s needed most.
