A BONUS MUSIQUE ROYALE CONCERT AT ST JOHN’S!

A scheduling complication with a venue in Parrsboro resulted in a bonus Musique Royale concert at St. John’s. On Friday August 22, we welcomed the Halifax Rättvik Trio to perform a concert of old and new folk music from Sweden and the Maritimes. The trio is comprised of Jennifer Publicover of Halifax on flutes, and some step dancing; Peter Rousu of Sweden on guitar; and Stefan Ekedahl on cello, spelpipor (a recorder-like instrument) and Swedish bagpipes!  Both Peter and Ekedahl are from Rättvik, a city in central Sweden, hence the name of the trio! Most of the pieces were based on a 3/4 time structure, giving the music a lilt and dance-like feel.  Many of them were traditional tunes, but the Trio also performed several original compositions written by Peter Rousu, the guitarist. The evening was a very pleasant affair, and even though the last-minute booking of the Halifax Rättvik Trio left little time for marketing, a respectably-sized and wildly appreciative audience was in attendance. The Trio have recorded their debut album and it is currently available on Spotify. Further information can be found on their website at halifaxrattvik.com.
