A BONUS MUSIQUE ROYALE CONCERT AT ST JOHN’S!

A scheduling complication with a venue in Parrsboro resulted in a bonus Musique Royale concert at St. John’s. On Friday August 22, we welcomed the Halifax Rättvik Trio to perform a concert of old and new folk music from Sweden and the Maritimes. The trio is comprised of Jennifer Publicover of Halifax on flutes, and some step dancing; Peter Rousu of Sweden on guitar; and Stefan Ekedahl on cello, spelpipor (a recorder-like instrument) and Swedish bagpipes!  Both Peter and Ekedahl are from Rättvik, a city in central Sweden, hence the name of the trio! Most of the pieces were based on a 3/4 time structure, giving the music a lilt and dance-like feel.  Many of them were traditional tunes, but the Trio also performed several original compositions written by Peter Rousu, the guitarist. The evening was a very pleasant affair, and even though the last-minute booking of the Halifax Rättvik Trio left little time for marketing, a respectably-sized and wildly appreciative audience was in attendance.
